Hirschman was born in New York City in 1933. He received a B.A from City College of New York (1955) and an M.A. and PhD. from
Indiana University. He taught at Dartmouth and the University of California, Los Angeles through the 1960's and early 1970's.
He has since published over 50 volumes of poetry, been assistant editor of the journal "Left Curve," was appointed Poet Laureate
of San Francisco (2006), and Poet in Residence of the San Francisco Public Library. He helps host the San Francisco International
Poetry Festival and is active in the Revolutionary Poets Brigade.
